Collaboration with SFU’s History class

In 2021, VHS engaged in a collaborative research project with SFU’s HIST 486 – History of Vancouver class to encourage students to learn about Vancouver’s past. In addition to writing a research paper, the students were asked to use their creativity and to present their findings through a digital project of their choice. The end result was nine wonderful projects that covered topics related to Chinatown, Hogan’s Alley, Stanley Park, Riverview Hospital, the Japanese-Canadian internment, Vancouver’s punk music scene, the Indigenous presence and representation during the 2010 Winter Olympics, and Expo 86. Below you find the links to the projects. Enjoy!

Alyssa created a Facebook page (Peril of the Orient) to reflect on Vancouver’s Chinatown – Peril of the Orient

Justin made a podcast about the story of a Javanese gamelan, gifted to Simon Fraser University after Expo 86.

Aliya created a YouTube video to talk about Vancouver’s development as “Hollywood North” in the 1970s – Vancouver Still Has Yet To Play Itself

Gabe presented her findings about the Riverview Hospital on a Tumblr page – Riverview Hospital: an ongoing history!

Marissa researched the Japanese-Canadian internment and used Prezi to share her findings – The Internment of Japanese Canadians, 1942-1949
